The Brothers Gray Hawk

Tote Gray Hawk's 'mechanic hands'.
Lenny Gray Hawk, left, and his brothers Brad and Tote have been working on cars their whole lives, a skill taught by their father.  Now they work on cars to make extra money and provide their community the service of cheap mechanical work.

Tote's hands wiggle through cables and engine components, trying to reattach the steering rod.

The brothers say that licensed mechanics are too expensive of the Fort Peck Reservation. If they were to become licensed, they would also be forced to charge more to cover the cost of employees, certification, and new parts.

Lenny, left, says his lack of higher education prevents him from becoming a certified mechanic.  Brad used to mechanic for the Cenex station in Poplar, Mont., but stopped.

Tote looks under the transmission of his sister's minivan, as Brad and Lenny check the engine compartment. Under the table mechanics often work on cars of family members, friends, or friends of friends.

Brad pulls a socket wrench from Lenny's meager hand-me-down tool box. The brothers are using a garage at Tote's employers, Fort Peck Transportation, but usually have do work wherever the car stopped running.
